Review & Giveaway! Smart Start by Pam Schiller

We all know how important brain development is in the early years. If there are activities we can do to improve brain function, why wouldn't we want to spend time doing those activities?

The only reason I can think of that parents would not spend time stimulating their child's brain is that they don't know what to do. Pam Schiller, PhD, served as head of the Early Childhood Department at the University of Houston, and wrote the book Smart Start to teach parents how to help their children boost brain power. In this book are those activities that you need to be doing on a regular basis to form those needed brain synapses.
From Smart Start, "There is currently little debate about whether learning is more dependent on nature or nurture. It is clear from the research that nature lays down a complex system of brain circuitry, but how that circuitry is "wired" depends upon external forces such as nutrition, surroundings, and stimulation."

To give you an idea of what activities are included (you can start using these now!)
  • Animal movements: Demonstrate how an animal moves. Ask your child to copy your movements.
  • Place a large sheet of paper on the floor and help baby finger paint on hands and knees. This will strengthen shoulders and hips and encourage weight shifting.
  • Rearrange the children's toys and equipment every so often. Let the children help if they express an interest in doing so.
  • Read a book backwards! See this information on page 91 of the book. Fascinating!
These are just a few of the ideas in this much needed book. You will find more strategies listed by type of activity, with age-appropriate activities listed in each chapter. In addition, you'll find suggestions for books to read to your child at different ages.

You can purchase Smart Start through Gryphon House here or check with your local retailer.
